Obtain a Marriage License

Marriage Application

Getting married? Save time by completing the Online Marriage Application, be sure to retain the request number.

Requirements

Each person applying for a license must:

  • Appear together at the county clerk’s office.
  • Provide a valid State or Government issued picture identification for proof of identity and age (such as a Driver’s License, Texas Identification Card or a Passport).
  • Provide Social Security Number (if applicable).
  • Not be divorced within the last 30 days (or provide a waiver).
  • Not presently married to someone other than the other applicant.
  • Not related to the other applicant:
    • an ancestor or descendant, by blood or adoption;
    • a brother or sister, of the whole or half blood or by adoption;
    • a parent's brother or sister of the whole or half blood or by adoption;
    • a son or daughter of a brother or sister of the whole or half blood or by adoption;
    • a current or former stepchild or stepparent; or
    • a son or daughter of a parent's brother or sister of the whole or half blood or by adoption
  • Be 18 years or older to obtain a marriage license.
  • $82.00 to obtain a Marriage License, Cash or Credit Card**

**Convenience fee applies for all Credit Card Transactions

Facts to Know:

The applicants must remember:

  • A marriage ceremony may not take place during the 72 hour period immediately following the issuance of the marriage license.
  • The 72 hours may be waived if:
    • One applicant can provide and Active Duty Military Id
    • The applicants request a waiver from a Judge of a District Court or a Statutory County Court or County Judge (list of judges provided on request by the County Clerk's Office)
  • If the marriage ceremony has not been conducted before the 91st day after the date the license is issued, the marriage license expires.
  • The person who conducts a marriage ceremony shall return the original license to the county clerk, once the marriage is recorded the license will be mailed to the couple at the address indicated on the application.
  • Blood Test is not required.

Persons Authorized to Conduct Ceremony

The following persons are authorized to conduct marriage ceremonies:

  • Licensed or ordained Christian ministers or priests;
  • Jewish Rabbis;
  • Persons who are officers of religious organizations and who are authorized by the organization to conduct marriage ceremonies;
  • Justices of Supreme Court, Judges of the Court of Criminal Appeals, Justices of the Courts of Appeals, Judges of the District, County, and Probate Courts, Judges of the County Courts at Law, Judge of the Courts of Domestic Relations and Juvenile Courts, Retired Justices and Judges of those Courts, Justice of the Peace, Retired Justices of the Peace, Judge of the Municipal Court, Retired Judge of a Municipal Court, or Judges or Magistrates of the Federal Courts of this state; and
  • A Retired Judge or Magistrate of a Federal Court of this State

Obtain Certified or Plain Copies of Marriage

Marriage licenses are only recorded in the county in which it was purchased, regardless of the place of marriage.

Cost

  • $20.00 Certified Copy for a Marriage Previously Recorded in the Clerk’s Office.
  • $ 1.00 Plain Copy of Marriage License Previously Recorded in the Clerk’s Office.

Obtain a Certificate by Mail

Complete the Application for Certified Copy of Marriage License 

Include the request with an accepted method of payment. Please provide a legible return address and day time telephone number (if available). Allow 5 - 7 days for delivery.

If the County Clerk’s Office does not receive the Application within 48 hours after the payment has been submitted, a refund will be processed (convenience fee excluded).

Certificate Request Paid by Credit Card:

To obtain a certificate by Credit Card (MasterCard, Visa, & Discover):

  1. Print and Complete the Certified Copy of Marriage License Form.

  2. Process Full Payment - Type of Transaction: Vitals (Certified Payments charges a convenience fee).

  3. Write the Certified Payments confirmation number on the Application.

  4. Submit the completed Application by email:

Please allow 5 - 7 days for delivery - Once the request is received and verified by the County Clerk’s Office.

Expedited Mail Service:

To request Expedited Services for a Certificate Paid by Credit Card:

  1. Print and Complete the Certified Copy of Marriage License Form.

  2. Print and Complete the Expedited Mail Service Form.

  3. Process Full Payment - Type of Transaction: Vitals (Certified Payments charges a convenience fee).

  4. Write the Certified Payments confirmation number on the Application.

  5. Email the Application and Expedited Services Form to the County Clerk’s Office.

The marriage license request will be processed the same day it is received and verified by the County Clerk’s Office.

 Absent Applicant Affidavit

If one or both parties cannot come to the Clerk's office to obtain the marriage license you must bring the following form with you.  Please read the instructions carefully.  Print this form on LEGAL paper.  This is a State required form and will be rejected if not filled out correctly.  Absent Applicant Affidavit & Instructions
